In our 16th year, the mission of the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program is to share the joy of Judaism, build community, and celebrate our Jewish heritage with a rich adult education program and unique family experiences.
Whether we are picking apples for Rosh Hashana, celebrating Shabbat while camping, clapping along with Jewish Blues or Rock musicians, hosting a community-wide Shabbat Alive outdoors, learning with internationally-known scholars or making life-long Jewish friends at family and adult retreats, CSP has programs to offer for all ages.

NYC is the center of the Jewish American experience. It’s where American Judaism was born and where it matured. And now, it is where Judaism is being re-visioned. Join us on a 6 day walking/talking/eating/learning adventure to NYC (May 2-7, 2017) co-sponsored by the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program (www.occsp.org), Congregation B’nai Israel of Tustin (www.cbi18.org) and the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County (www.jcfoc.org).
From the Lower East Side to the Upper West Side, Harlem, Williamsburg, the Bronx and Queens, we will immerse ourselves in our ever-evolving history with the goal of learning about our origins as Jewish Americans and meeting American Jews who are working to revolutionize Judaism in order to insure that our story is one that still has many pages left to share with future generations.
Highlights will include: Jewish Community of Colonial New Amsterdam Walking Tour; Jewish Harlem; Upper East Side Synagogues, Architecture and Fashion; VIP Tour of 9/11 Memorial and meeting with Museum Director Alice Greenwald; Bronx Tales bus tour (visit the Coops, a former left wing cooperative in the East Bronx, the Amalgamated Houses built by the unions in the 1920s and the Sholem Aleichem Houses, cruise along busy Fordham Road, pass the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens. and down the Grand Concourse lined with Art Deco apartment buildings to Yankee Stadium, relax at lunch and shopping on Arthur Avenue); Original Cross-town Pizza Walk; private jazz salon in the Harlem home of a music doyenne; Williamsburg – The Land of Hipsters and Chasidim; Brooklyn Art Museum with Sharon Keller; Greenwood Cemetery with Urban Historian Justin Ferate; Private breakfast at Russ & Daughters Cafe; From Hamishe to Hip: Its Not Your Grandparent's Lower East Side; O! Multitudes! A History of Housing in Early NYC; Tenement Museum - Hard Times Tour and Discussion; East Village/ Tenement Chic North; Art, Sex and Rock & Roll: New York on the Cultural Edge; Otto Kahn Mansion Tour; Central Park Bike Tour; A Morning on Museum Mile with Marc Michael Epstein; Queens for a Day (including a visit to The Rebbe’s Ohel, Forest Hills Jewish Center time with Solomon Schechter and Boris Tomashefsky, Ice Cream at Mike & Minas); Second Hand Rose" – A Journey On and Off the Yiddish Rialto.
And yes, you will have time to catch a Broadway show!
**Warning, there will be LOTS of walking and exploring, and you will have to make some itinerary choices each day. Maximum Group size: 50 people.
Cost covers all land programs starting Tuesday morning May 2nd and ending on Sunday evening May 7th (excluding optional Broadway shows), all food tours and food tastings, NYC map, and special January orientation; Meals included: Welcome dessert reception on May 2nd, Shabbat dinner May 5th, Shabbat Lunch May 6th and Closing dinner on May 7th. Not included: Airfare to NYC (book now for best rates or to use air-miles), transportation in NY (we will provide meeting points and times and recommend walking and use of Subway and cabs as appropriate), hotel/accommodation (see recommended list of hotels and book early to get best rates, or better yet, book your stay at a friend/relative). Please tell me if you would like an early arrivers add-on guided tour of Ellis Island with Urban Historian Justin Ferate on Monday May 1st in the morning (extra cost of $30 per person plus ferry fee).
