IFSA Dialogue on Inclusive Excellence:
Best Practices from Higher Education in a Study Abroad Context

Nov. 7, 2018
Kenyon College

The Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) is pleased to invite you and a guest to participate in a dialogue at Kenyon College on Nov. 7, 2018. This event is co-hosted by the Kenyon College Center for Global Engagement, and facilitated by Dr. Heather Barclay Hamir, IFSA President and CEO, Michelle Tolan Tomasi, IFSA Director for Inclusive Excellence, and Margaret McCullers, IFSA Associate Director of Academic and Special Projects. The dialogue will explore student engagement, high impact practices, career readiness, and inclusive excellence in study abroad.

How might education abroad as a High-Impact Educational Practice (George D. Kuh, 2008) move beyond conversations of access and representation to meet the promise of excellence for all undergraduates?  Dr. Barclay Hamir will discuss this ever-present topic using institutional research and case scenarios from her recent book, Promoting Inclusion in Education Abroad. She will also examine the potential role of education abroad in student success, including its compensatory effects for underrepresented populations and maximizing efficacy through intentional design. Facilitators will draw on concepts of inclusive excellence, engaging diversity, inclusion, equity, and our shared commitment to educating the “whole student” as a future professional leader.

Participants will engage in lively discussion with colleagues to enhance our collective knowledge on fostering student success through education abroad. Given the relevance of this topic to broader campus conversations, we hope you will bring a key partner from another area of your campus.

Please join us at Kenyon College on Nov. 7, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please register by Nov. 1, 2018. Beverages and lunch will be provided. Location, parking details and Dialogue schedule will follow by email.
