Delta Studies Institute 2020-2021 (7202) 

8Join us in a three-day teacher institute to learn about the San Joaquin and Sacramento Delta. Water management experts will help you expand your knowledge of endangered species, climate change and human impact on Delta's ever-changing ecosystem. You will learn how to apply a 5E inquiry model when teaching environmental science to your students.

Who should attend?
K-12 teachers who want additional materials to effectively implement Next Generation Science Standards. Administrators and teachers who want to strengthen their science program using local resources. Upon program completion, teachers will receive a $200 stipend.

 October 3, 20220 - Delta Bus Tour (Meet at SJCOE)

  • Learn about salmon restoration efforts and water conservation at Cross Channel Gates.
  • Delta restoration, climate change impacts on California’s water and carbon sequestration project at Twichell Island.
  • Visit Big Break Regional Shoreline and learn about the human impact on the Sacramento and San Joaquin watershed.

November 14, 2020 -  Curriculum Strategies and Implementation Workshop (Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center)

  • Learn about the ways of implementing shifts in the NGSS and 5E Inquiry model in the classroom.
  • Familiarize yourself and receive free EEI units.
  • Familiarize and receive free Delta Studies curriculum.
  • Hands-on activities and sample 5E lesson sequences in different grade bands.

May 5, 2021 - Teacher Project Night (SJCOE)

Teachers will share their presentations illustrating their implementation of phenomenon-based lessons.

Program Expectations 

In order to receive a $200 stipend and be eligible to apply for a continuing education unit from TCSJ (additional $95):
  • Teachers will attend all three days of the institute. 
  • Teachers will plan and teach a lesson that includes elements of the 5E inquiry-based lesson sequence. The lesson should include content from the Delta Studies institute.
  • Teachers will create a presentation to showcase the lesson and submit the lesson plan including 5E lesson elements.
  • A $200 stipend will be awarded upon completion of the program to the first 28 PAID registrants. All registrations will be timestamped. Please pay with PayPal, credit card or check. The check should be made out to SJCOE and mailed to Delta Studies, STEM Programs, PO Box 213030, Stockton, CA 95213.
