MPS Art Therapy Community Lecture

In Praise of Wordless Comfort

Dr. Helen Stein, PhD

In 2003 Dr. Helen Stein was diagnosed with breast cancer and also learned her sister had advanced reproductive cancer. She will be presenting on why she chose art therapy over talk therapy and why she felt that much of her experience was beyond words. Dr. Stein will also be discussing how she handled a friend’s suicide. Using her own life experience and art work she will illustrate how art therapy can play an important role in coping.

Helen Stein, PhD is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. She currently supervises psychology interns at New York Presbyterian Hospital and clinical psychology graduate students at CUNY. She was a consultant for the Center for Trauma and Resilience at NY State Psychiatric Institute on a project designed to enhance coping survivors of 9/11. Dr. Stein’s areas of clinical expertise are treatment of depression, personality disorders, and trauma-related disorders.
