Please join the NASW/CT Latino/a Social Workers Network for this timely and important training.  This course will provide participants with the understanding of how voter education, registration, and engagement are a set of core activities which derive from our profession’s focus on “the dignity and worth of all people”.  

In the first half of this program, participants will receive a brief history of voter suppression in the United States. A special component will address the importance of marginalized groups (e.g.: African-Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, women, poor people) being engaged to vote to reclaim a right that has been historically denied to them. In the second half of the program, social workers will be introduced to various ways they can engage potential voters in the upcoming election. The presenter uses a systems approach to support participants with exploring ways they can promote non-partisan civic engagement in micro, mezzo and macro spaces within a professional and personal context.

Dr. Madeline Perez De Jesus is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work & Equitable Community Practice at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ).  She is also on the National Planning Team of the Voting is Social Work Campaign.  Dr. Perez earned her doctorate from the City University of New York and her master's degree from the Hunter College School of Social Work.  In her co-authored book, Theory & Educational Research (Routledge Press), she writes about her relationship with theory.  madeline's other publications include articles in Social Work with Groups and Reflections: Narrative of Professional Helping. Dr. Perez's work focuses on how to best assist marginalized and underrepresented populations have their voices heard.  Her work in voter education, registration and engagement is a natural extension of this focus.

This training is free to all registrants unless CECs are needed.

For CECs, the cost is $10.00 for NASW members,
$25.00 for non-members.
