Lewis & Clark Law School’s Environmental and Natural Resources law program and the Center for Animal Law Studies are pleased to announce two exciting online professional development courses this summer. These courses are for attorneys, policymakers, medical professionals, employees in the private, non-profit, and government sectors, and anyone else interested in energy law or animal law issues.

The Law & Ethics of Animal Testing

Dr. Paul Locke, Director, DrPH Program in Environmental Health Sciences; Associate Professor, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; Distinguished Visiting Professor, Lewis & Clark Law School.

July 21 – August 1, 2014

This course will release 8 hours of lecture on July 21 for participants to listen to at their convenience. Dr. Locke will also host a live chat session on August 1 where participants can engage in discussion with Dr. Locke and their colleagues.

The Law & Ethics of Animal Testing will cover the rapidly evolving regulatory framework regarding animals used for biomedical research and toxicity testing, the innovations in alternative testing methodologies, and how industry and the research community are responding to animal welfare issues and concerns.

10 Oregon CLE credits are pending. CLE, CME, and CVE credit may also be available in your state.

This course qualifies for 8.75 contact hours of continuing education credit for ACAP, and 8.75 continuing education hours for AALAS. Please submit the certificate of completion to your board of certification to receive credit.

The cost for this class is $325. (There will be a $25 administration fee for all cancelled registrations.)

Electricity Essentials: Renewables, Utilities & Transmission

June 9-12, 2014

The course will release 2 hours of lecture each day with an opportunity for interactive live chats each evening at 7 pm PST (which may be adjusted depending on the time zone of the registrants). There is also an opportunity to take this class outside of the June 9-12 window (without the live chat sessions that will be offered during the week of June 9) if desired.

Electricity Essentials: Renewables, Utilities & Transmission will provide a comprehensive overview of the U.S. electricity supply and will address the following key components:

Introduction: overview of key terms and participants, history of the power sector development, and likely changes ahead

Utility Regulation: historical foundation for utility regulation, monopoly regulation, and implications of rate regulation

Electricity Regulation: The Federal Power Act and state vs. federal regulation, restructuring and jurisdictional implications (including discussion of PURPA, ISO’s and RTO’s, and state restructuring and California’s experience)

Renewables: overview of renewable sources and policies (including tax credits, renewable portfolio standards, and net metering and feed-in tariffs)

Transmission: transmission overview, siting issues, and cost allocation
