The DC Water's Biosolids Management Program
Joint Meeting with the American Water Resources Association, National Capital Region
Brent Christ, Construction Supervisor for DC Water
Dave Schwartz, Project Manager for PC/CDM Joint Venture
Peter Loomis, Design Manager for CDM Smith
The Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant is the largest advanced wastewater plant in the world. Its peak treatment capacity exceeds 1 billion gallons per day, serving over 2 million residents of Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia. DC Water is currently implementing a ten-year, $3.8 billion Capital Improvement Program, which aims to improve the District’s water and sewer infrastructure. One major component of this is the Biosolids Management Program (BMP), which focuses on the reduction of biosolids volume and its treatment for regulatory use.
The Main Process Train (MPT) is one of four main projects of the BMP, and was awarded in 2011 to the joint venture of CDM Smith and PC Construction as a Design-Build delivery and has a contract amount exceeding $208 million. The MPT will involve the implementation of thermal hydrolysis technology and anaerobic digestion at Blue Plains to significantly reduce biosolids hauling and disposal, increase biogas production, and improve the facility's future sustainability.
The presentation will have three distinguished speakers: Brent Christ is the Construction Supervisor for DC Water and will provide insight on the project's background and its drivers; Dave Schwartz, VP of CDM Smith and Project Manager for the PC/CDM Joint Venture, will discuss the design-build process; and Peter Loomis, also of CDM Smith, and design manager for the MPT project, will discuss technical aspects of the project.
This meeting will be jointly sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Capital Section (ASCE-NCS), and the American Water Resources Association, National Capital Region.
