We invite you to join us for the next Community Book Club!

Heather McGhee's The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together is the seventh book in Neighborhood Leadership Institute's Community Book Club. Hundreds of community members have contributed to ongoing dialogue on social justice in previous groups and we invite you to join as well. These Book Club discussions begin Tuesday June 15th. The group will convene for five weeks, with the last session scheduled for July 13th.  Guests will participate in weekly discussions led by NLI facilitator GiGi Elder. Participants should be ready to discuss the Introduction and Chapters 1 & 2 at the first session.

About the book:

Heather McGhee’s The Sum of Us starts with the assumption that the majority of Americans are suffering economically due to policy that benefits only a small segment at the top of the social hierarchy. Through her personal experiences, legal studies, and work at the think tank Demos, McGhee comes to realize that underpinning America’s unjust economic landscape is systemic racism fueled by the white supremacy built into the country from its start. Each chapter of her text tackles a specific area of American society to uncover the sources of injustice and inequality and to suggest strategies for tackling these problems for the common good.
