Steps to Starting a Maine Nonprofit at Cloudport CoWorking Space

This is a NO-COST workshop sponsored by the Maine Association of Nonprofits and Cloudport. 

The process for transforming an idea into an operating organization can be complicated. This session will help those with a passion for creating change to refine their vision, mission and approach and understand the practical steps necessary to turn that vision into reality.  Participants will leave with a better understanding of the step-by-step process for incorporating and applying for tax-exempt status. Please note that this session does not include legal advice

Recommended Audience:

  • Those interested in starting a nonprofit in Maine, but who have not yet filed Form 1023 (the Application for Recognition of Exemption)

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will have increased awareness of alternatives and personal readiness
  • Participants will clarify their vision/purpose
  • Participants will have increased awareness of the steps to creating a nonprofit corporation and pursuing tax-exempt status

Your Presenters

Tom Leonhardt

Tom Leonhardt is a SCORE mentor and has worn many hats in his nonprofit career, including management, supervision, leadership, strategic planning, team building, facilitation, coaching, issues management and advocacy. In the area of organizational development, Tom has worked with groups to do strategic planning, issues management, coaching, mentoring, internal and external communication protocols.

Tom has facilitated international conferences, retreats, team planning events, technical workshops and meetings. In retirement, Tom has devoted his time to doing pro bono work for nonprofits in the Portland area.

Molly O'Connell

Molly O’Connell serves as Assistant Director of Maine Association of Nonprofits, a membership organization dedicated to empowering people with purpose by strengthening the leadership, voice and organizational effectiveness of Maine nonprofits. In addition to coordinating their strategic workplan and providing administrative leadership, she plays a lead role in managing MANP’s Nonprofit Help Desk, directing the Emerging Leaders and Springboard programs, authoring publications and toolkits, and curating resources for a free, searchable online resource library, the Answer Center. Prior to her work with MANP, Molly has worn a variety of hats within Maine nonprofit organizations, including as an Amercorps*VISTA, youth development program manager, volunteer recruiter, and volunteer. Molly holds a BA in English from Wesleyan University.
