"With united hearts..." Creating an inclusive prayer tradition for "all faiths in America" dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress as one of their first acts together chose the unifying element of prayer. In an effort to more formally highlight this rich history, The Thanks-Giving Foundation was instrumental in collaborating with President Ronald Reagan and Ambassador Anne Armstrong to set aside a permanent National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday in May, beginning in 1981. By annual Presidential proclamation this tradition continues today. Our commemorative prayer celebration which began in Dallas has been adopted by many other cities and organizations around the country.
