Training on SBIRT for Substance Use in School Based Health Centers (SBHCs)

Description: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a public health approach to reducing the negative impact that substance use has on population health. SBIRT involves screening populations to identify individuals who are using substances in a risky or unhealthy way, delivering brief interventions to change behaviors and attitudes of individual who are putting their health at risk with substance use, and referral to treatment for individuals who require specialty care.

Given the high rates of substance use among students and the potentially serious health impact of substance use for adolescents, the implementation of SBIRT in school settings can be a critical step in the effort to address substance use’s impact on the nation’s health.

SBIRT, an evidence-based approach, has emerged as a critical strategy for targeting the large but often overlooked population that exceeds low-risk use. The goal of Interact’s SBIRT project is to integrate SBIRT into the standard delivery of healthcare in the SBHC’s. In this training, participants will learn both the clinical skills and about implementation considerations that they can use when creating and delivering SBIRT services in their SBHC programs.
