Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA)

Seattle Street Light Test --  Participant Registration
March 6, 7, 8, 2012

Participants will receive $40 per participant / per night

The Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle City Light, in collaboration with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, are conducting a demonstration project to evaluate the use of energy-saving LED streetlights.

Similar studies have been conducted in Anchorage, San Jose, and San Diego, all intended to help local governments determine how LED streetlights improve roadway safety while reducing energy costs.

Participants are now being recruited from the Seattle area to take part in the test and upon completion of the test will receive a $40 Visa gift card for use wherever Visa is accepted for 2-2.5 hours of their time. The test will be conducted for either one or two nights (depending on weather conditions) over the period of March 6, 7 and 8, 2012. Should weather conditions permit a second test, participants are welcome to attend both nights and will be paid per night of attendance.

How Participation Works:

The Seattle roadway chosen for the study is 15th Avenue NW, between NW 80th Street and NW 65th Street in Ballard. Participants will take a one-hour indoor orientation, followed by a 1-1.5 hour walk during which they will fill out a questionnaire regarding various types of street lighting. Participants should be in sufficient physical condition to walk up a moderate hill and have sustained energy for 1-1.5 hours outside in evening temperatures. A small number of participants will also take part in a vehicle test where, in addition to the walking survey, they will be driven through the test site in a vehicle and asked to identify small targets along the way. Participants will be given at least 24 hours notice of which nights between March 6-8 the tests will take place, so please indicate your availability on the form on the next page. We are looking for a range of ages to participate.
