RM2N Education/Outreach Group Exploration Workshop 

Join us for the RM2N Education/Outreach Group Exploration Workshop where you will 1) learn about the various education/outreach efforts of RM2N members, 2) investigate whether an education/outreach group will be beneficial to RM2N members, and 3) determine the structure and goals of an RM2N education/outreach group. Register by Monday, November 9, 2015.

Draft Agenda:

9:00 – Welcome / Outline of Goals and Attendee Introduction

9:15 – Education and Outreach Efforts

Each group will give a short introduction (5 min. or less) of themselves and their education/outreach efforts including:

  • Your group’s education/outreach goals
  • The programs your group is currently running
  • The audience your programs are targeting
  • What, if any methods you are using to measure success
  • The biggest challenges you face in your education/outreach efforts\

10:30 – Break and networking

10:45 – Breakout Session

Small groups will discuss topics related to education/outreach that will be chosen during registration. The topics under consideration are:

     1)   Broadening participation of underrepresented groups in Materials Science and Engineering

     2)   K-12 / Science Teacher Education

     3)   Undergraduate Education

     4)   Incorporating Research into Undergraduate Education

     5)   How to fund education/outreach efforts

     6)   Improving Science Communication

Each small group will:

     1)   Define the challenges of each topic

     2)   Generate ideas about how a group could best address the challenges

     3)   List what would be needed to address the challenges

     4)   Determine how the network will measure success

Noon – Break for Lunch and Networking

1:00 – Continue Breakout Session – each small group will write a summary of its findings to present to the large group.

2:00 – Presentation to the large group – each group will summarize its findings to the large group and get feedback.

3:00 – Overall summary – the large group will consider the information from the small groups and determine:

  • Whether a formal group should be formed?
  • The goals of the proposed group
  • The structure and meeting schedule of the group
  • Next steps

4:00 – Meeting ends
