UW-Madison Facilities Days Open House 

Please join us for the 3rd annual showcase of core facilities within the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus with a focus on instrumentation and resources for materials research. This event is hosted by the College of Engineering Shared Facilities, the Department of Geoscience Research Facilities, and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research & Graduate Education.

The purpose of this event is to increase awareness of the multitude of materials research instrumentation and other resources available on campus both to maintain efficient interactions among departments as well as to increase industrial interaction with students and campus resources.

POSTER SESSION

The poster session is open to all students and postdocs currently working in a materials science-related area and whose research features data collected in any of the campus shared facilities. Posters will be judged by innovative use of instrumentation and overall presentation and the top posters will be recognized and awarded. Click here for more information on the poster session.

Other UW shared instrument facilities: You are welcome to bring a poster to share so that we can learn more about your facility! Please contact Jennifer Weber if you plan to bring a poster.

PARTICIPATING CORE FACILITIES

The Materials Science Center

The MSC resides in the Materials Science and Engineering Building and houses numerous electron, optical and scanning probe microscopes, profilometers, and samples preparation and processing equipment and has 5 full time staff members to help train users and update instrumentation.

The Soft Materials Lab

The SML is housed in Engineering Hall and has a wide variety of optical, mechanical, and thermal processing, as well as thin film coating and patterning capabilities, all geared towards soft materials and polymers. The SML has two staff members to train users and maintain equipment.

The Wisconsin Center for Applied Microelectronics

The WCAM resides on the third floor of the Engineering Centers Building (ECB) and is a full spectrum, 10,000 SF class 10/100/1000 cleanroom for patterning, packaging, etching, thin film growth and deposition, as well as MEMS, wafer bonding, and nanoimprint lithography. The WCAM has 5 full time staff members to train users and maintain equipment.

Department of Geoscience Research Facilities

The Geoscience Research Facilities includes the Electron Microprobe Lab, Fluid Inclusion Lab, Halliburton Geoscience Visualization Center, GPS Surveying Facility, Quarternary Sediment Analysis Lab, ICP-TIMS Isotope Laboratory, WiscAr Geochronology Lab, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Lab, Stable Isotope Lab, Thin Section Lab, Wisconsin Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (Wisc-SIMS), Ion Microprobe Lab, and X-ray Diffraction Lab.

UW-Madison Physical Sciences Lab

The UW-Madison Physical Sciences Lab is a research and development lab that provides services including consulting, design, fabrication, and calibration services in scientific instrumentation. PSL is located south of Madison, Wisconsin and houses state of the art machinery and electronics shops. Highly trained staff in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics address the unique needs of research projects of every scale and complexity.

Paul Bender Chemical Instrumentation Center

The Paul Bender Instrument Center houses the Chemistry Department's major shared analytical instrumentation (magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction). These instruments are maintained and updated by an expert staff that provides user training and data interpretation in support of departmental research. The Center is located on the second floor of the Chemistry building.

National Magnetic Resonance Facility at Madison

The National Magnetic Resonance Facility at Madison (NMRFAM) is a resource for biomolecular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and related techniques that aims to expand the fronteirs of biomolcular NMR spectroscopy through technology, research, and development programs.
