Why Support the LEAP Schools

Nelson Mandela famously said : “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”.

How would you like to become involved in a unique social initiative aimed at changing the world of children from deeply disadvantaged communities on the other side of the globe ? Now you can, by joining forces with the broader Hinsdale Community to support the non-profit LEAP Science and Maths Schools in South Africa, and become an active partner in building an international cross-cultural bond between our communities that will result in learning and benefit for all.

It can rightfully be said that our own children have been the inspiration behind this vision. Following a visit to LEAP in South Africa in 2007, students returned to Hinsdale Central High School determined to help LEAP in whatever way they could and the LEAP Club was formed.

It was established with the express purpose of raising funds for LEAP every year, and they have been successfully doing that ever since — well over $100,000 to date, and counting! An extraordinary demonstration of giving without any expectation of reward, other than knowing that they are making a genuine contribution to improving the lives of others far less fortunate.

This inspired Tom and Judy Casten to commit to supporting LEAP, and for the past 5 years the Casten Family Foundation has not only been a major financial contributor to LEAP, but also funded teacher exchange programmes for LEAP teachers to visit Hinsdale, and for Hinsdale educators from District 86 and District 181 to visit LEAP.
