Austerlitz Historical Society Winter Writing Workshops - 2015

The Austerlitz Historical Society will be sponsoring two writing workshops for adults this winter.  One for FICTION writing, on Tuesday evening, January 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, and one for Memoir writing, on Tuesday evening, February 10, also from 6:00 to 9:00 pm (assuming no blizzards are then in progress). [NOTE:  A separate email invitation will be sent out for the Memoir Writing Workshop.]  The workshops will take place in a room on the first floor of the Morey-Devereaux House.

Participants should bring writing materials (such as a laptop computer or pen and paper).  The facilitator will provide an inkjet printer.  During the workshop, participants will have the option of either writing a new piece of fiction/memoir or reworking a short (fewer than 1,000 words) piece that they have already drafted.

The workshops will begin with a conversation about fiction/memoir writing.  For most of the workshop, participants will be writing and the facilitator will be available for individual discussions on the works in progress.  The workshops will conclude with the participants critiquing each other’s efforts.

To make the most of the time we have available, and as a courtesy to other participants, please arrive sufficiently early to get settled prior to the 6:00 pm start.

About Our Facilitator

Local best-selling author T.M. Hawley will lead the workshop. Tim lives in the Varney House at Old Austerlitz, and is the author of Against the Fires of Hell: The Environmental Disaster of the Gulf War, published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1992. He is currently under contract with Farrar, Straus & Giroux for his forthcoming work of narrative nonfiction, Fantasia on an Oak Table, a wide-ranging celebration of all things oak, borne on the story of how he came into some of the finest oak lumber on Earth, and then designed and built an Arts and Crafts-inspired dining table out of it. Tim also writes commercially for high-tech companies, and edits fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir, and academic works. While this will be the first writing workshop he will be leading in the area, he has led writing workshops in other settings and has mentored a number of aspiring writers.
