AFP-Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter September Meeting Notice & Newsletter

Please join us for the September AFP-UMV meeting!

PRESENTER:  Donald R. Gray

Don is the retired vice president for principal gifts at the University of Wisconsin Foundation, where he was responsible for working with top-level givers and was part of a team overseeing the successful $1.8 billion “Create the Future: The Campaign for Wisconsin.”

PROGRAM:    Words Matter, Even in Fundraising and Development

The words we use and how we use them help define who we are -- to others, as a professional, and yes, even to ourselves. All professions, including our work in nonprofits, develop an internal jargon that might mean something to the outside world far different from what we within the profession intend. During this short, fun discussion we will discuss some of these words and explore alternative ways of defining the honorable profession we all work in.

RSVP! Register by clicking the Register Now! button below no later than Thursday, September 8 at Noon. You will have the option to pay in advance using a credit card, or indicate you would like to pay at the door. Note: You can only register one person at time, unless the additional individuals are attending for the first-time as a free guest/prospective member.

**If you RSVP, but can no longer attend and do not cancel before the deadline, you will still be expected to pay.**

New Website Design to Come!

The AFP Chaper Website Program has provided participating chapters with a strong, branded online platform for their members and public for over the past decade. To advance AFP's reputation as a leader in the fundraising field and provide members and chapters with the best online tools possible, we are ready to make the leap to a new website platform that values social community and knowledge building.

AFP IHQ has partnered with industry leader Higher Logic to provide a community-based website for all AFP Chapters. These new community-based websites are FREE to all AFP chapters and will launch in January 2018. Each chapter will be provided our own site, branded with our logo. Chapters will be able to further personalize site content and appearance within the provided template choices. Here's a taste of what we can expect:

*landing page and website for all news and annoucements; community platform for members (and public) to engage via posting files, discussions, collaborate; hub for posting and promoting chapter events, discussion groups allowing chapters to chat internally or with other chapters; document sharing and resource libraries; event calendars and more!

As we transition to the new platform, if you have interest in being a part of our chapter's web transition team, please feel free to contact Megan Sadowski at msadowsk@smumn.edu. Also, if you have a special interest in communications and are also looking for a way to get more involved with our local AFP UMV chapter, we will have a chapter "webmaster" role opening starting in January. Contact Megan with questions.

National Philanthropy Day - Mark your calendars for November 15th!

On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, the Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter of AFP will celebrate National Philanthropy Day with our community. As we gather to recognize the individuals and organizations who generously give to support the mission of organizations throughout our community, please plan to attend and invite those close to your organization to attend as well. Whether it is your CEO or executive director, board members or volunteers, please personally extend an invitation to them. If you would like them added to our mailing list, please provide the name as it would appear on an invitation and complete address to Jacque Schreiner at Western no later than September 15, 2017. Jacque’s email is schreiderj@westerntc.edu.

Congratulations!

We applaud Mandy Nogle, CFRE, Associate Director of Development, at Gundersen Medical Foundation, for earning her CFRE certification earlier this summer.

Opportunity to Learn and Serve

Serving on a board of directors is an excellent way to learn some of the operational aspects of an organization and develop professional skills outside of your normal work. The AFP – Upper Mississippi is currently seeking individuals who are interested in serving on the board for the 2018 calendar year. The board typically meets ninety minutes prior to chapter meetings with some committee and outside work required. We are strongly encouraging members to self-identify by contacting any currently serving board member to learn more.
