Holy Comforter is a parish of the Diocese of Atlanta with a unique mission:  two-thirds of its parishioners are marginalized by both poverty and a mental health diagnosis. Holy Comforter is a warm, welcoming, open, sometimes loud, and always interesting community. Holy Comforter, along with its affiliated non-profit, The Friendship Center, promotes the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of its community members through not only spiritual formation but through meals, a gardening program, art and other creative activities, yoga, and most of all, love and friendship.
The Friendship Center was established in 1997 in response to reductions in publiclu funded day programs for people with mental illness.  Deacon John will share from his experinece at Holy Comforter to help address the challenges faced by our neighbors with severe mental illness.

Deacon John Ray has served at Church of the Holy Comforter in East Atlanta since his ordination in 2018. In addition to his work at Holy Comforter, John has worked in immigrant detention and hunger ministries. He is the Founder of Backpacks of Love, which works through schools to meet emergency food needs of children and young adults. John was recently appointed Director of Deacon Formation in the Diocese of Atlanta by Bishop Rob Wright.

Deacons Talking on the Road to Emmaus is a web-based way for deacons to walk with each other and share their stories in hope of inspiring, supporting and renewing diaconal ministries. It is inspired by the story of Cleopas and another disciple who, after recounting all that they had experienced while walking on the road to Emmaus with a stranger, recognized Jesus in their midst (Luke 24:13-32). Jesus' presence led them to release their fear and grief, to return to Jerusalem to share their experience of the resurrected Christ with the gathered community, and to renew their ministry with confidence.

Sponsored by Pathways for Baptismal Living at Bexley Seabury Seminary and the Association for Episcopal Deacons, these free, live, interactive web conferences occur monthly on the second Monday at 8:00 pm ET and feature deacons sharing stories from their ministries, exploring case studies, offering peer wisdom and feedback, and exchanging mutual support. The Reverend Connie Campbell-Pearson,  Deacon & Accompanist at St. James Episcopal church, Bozman and The (Ret.) Venerable Roxanne Klingensmith join Dr. Julie Lytle, Bexley Seabury Seminary's DIrector of Distributive and Lifelong Learning, in ihosting the webinar and in dentifying deacons to share their stories.  We hope you will join us for our upcoming conversations.
