CLAIMS ADMINISTRATION WORKSHOP 
August 30, 2018

The South Carolina Workers' Compensation Commission will conduct a Claims Administration Workshop on Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, 8301 Parklane Road, Columbia, SC 29223. 

This workshop is for individuals responsible for processing, managing and adjudicating claims in the State's workers' compensation system; including  attorneys, adjusters, claims managers, risk managers, paralegals, legal assistants, insurance carriers, and employers.

The morning general session will include a case study that will provide step by step explanation of the process by which a claim is handled by the Commission from the day of the injury through the hearing and closing process.  Commission staff members will guide the participants in using forms and documents to timely shepherd a claim through the entire process.   This year will emphasize on how motions are used during the litigation process.

The workshop will include mock hearings to decide several different motions that come up during the case study.  Presiding over the mock hearing will be the Honorable T. Scott Beck, Chairman, S.C. Workers' Compensation Commission.  

Following lunch, participants will choose one of the following sessions:

 

Claims Administration - Participate in a small group discussion and question and answer session with Sonji Spann, Claims Department Director, and her staff as they review Fines and Penalties. Discussion will also include electronic data reporting using the IAIABC Claims EDI Release 3.0 standard for the electronic transfer of Subsequent Report of Injury (SROI) information.

Judicial -  Amy Bracy, Judicial Department Director, and her staff will conduct a small group discussion and question and answer session explaining the Commission's judicial proceedings, requirements of adjudicating a claim through the mediation, hearing and appeals process. Discussion will also include enhancements to the Commission's electronic processes and procedures including eCase, Upload, and electronic filing.

For Attorneys - Commission Chairman T. Scott Beck, his administrative assistant Shawnee DeBruhl, and Commission General Counsel Keith Roberts will conduct a small group discussion focusing on motion practice.

Topics covered in the afternoon general session include: Changes to the Regulations, Electronic Payment and Q&A.

REGISTRATION: Cost to attend the workshop is $60 per person and payment may be made electronically at the time of registration. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. No registration will be processed without full payment.

CANCELLATIONS: Cancellation requests received by the Commission by August 17, 2018 will receive a full refund. No credit or refund will be given for "no shows." Cancellation requests must be made in writing to Amy Proveaux, aproveaux@wcc.sc.gov.
