Your instructor: Patrick McDougall
Patrick started his career in Financial Services after receiving his BBA from Baruch College. Patrick currently works at BNP Paribas where he is one of the Bank’s regulatory reporting specialists. One of his primary roles includes building out the system requirements necessary to automate some of the reports that get sent to the Federal Reserve Bank. Previously Patrick spent about 3 years at JP Morgan Chase in a core finance role. While there, one of Patrick’s primary responsibilities included working on an expense team that focused on gathering data elements around thousands of efficiency initiatives across the bank’s technology and operations organization. He helped design a system that was used to track qualitative metrics for about $1 billion of efficiency savings across the Markets, Investor Services and Banking businesses. Patrick has also been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since 1996. He obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2010 and has served as an assistant scoutmaster for his troop. Patrick currently lives in Queens, NY.
About the class:
A note from your instructor: "During the several years that I have worked in the financial services industry, I have found some well-built spreadsheets and some poorly built spreadsheets. Banks are almost drowning in the amount of data they have and are trying to manage it as best they can. This is why spreadsheets have become even more prevalent in the financial services industry over the past several years. There are some fundamental guidelines, which I like to call "spreadsheet etiquette," that I believe can help you avoid building a poorly designed spreadsheet. The essence of any good user tool is that it’s easy to understand, easy to refresh, and has strong controls in place.
"It is my goal to give you the tools necessary to create a well-designed spreadsheet like the one discussed above. We will review how to properly set up a spreadsheet and put the controls in place to minimize the impact of human error. We will also go over how to manage large datasets and enhance raw data dumps from internal systems. Finally, we will spend a significant amount of time on dashboard views using tools such as pivot tables."
