Zoom Watercolor Workshop: Jan 29-30, 2021
9:00am demo, 2:00pm critique each day
What is Sue Up to now?
Why start 2021 in the same rut you ended 2020? In this workshop, Sue Martin will show a way to jump-start the New Year by forgetting what you know and playing like a child with mixed media, curiosity, and a non-judgmental mindset. On the first day we’ll work on a full sheet (22x30) of 300 lb watercolor paper divided by tape into about 18 rectangles. We will start work abstractly, exploring mark making, color, shape, texture, value, and line in a playful way. If students wish to use representational imagery, they will work from memory or imagination rather than photos. We’ll use whatever materials we have at hand, or have wanted to try, including watercolor, acrylic, pencils, crayons, pastel, collage, and gouache – whatever you want! On the second day, work on your choice of surface and size, further exploring one of your experiments from the first day.
Workshop Schedule:
1 hour Zoom meetings at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.
The time from 10 to 2 pm will be open for students to play with their choice of materials in the manner demonstrated by Sue. Students will then bring them to our online Zoom meeting to share for critique and feedback. Sue Martin will provide a suggested materials/tools list (though students are free to use whatever they have), a diagram for dividing the watercolor sheet for Day 1, photos of her own experimental work and a further developed painting based on an experiment.
