Hear some fascinating history about the Tonawandas and its location on the Erie Canal on this special tour. How did we become associated with lumber? And what years did we surpass Chicago as the Lumber Capital of the World?
Explore streets named after early land owners and influential citizens. Pass late 19th-century and early 20th-century homes with classic architecture, and learn about their former residents.
Admire the stained-glass skylight at the Carnegie Art Center. View the graves of the Herschell Family in an historic cemetery, and stop inside the Allan Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum for a full tour of the complex. Our tour will take us to the six buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places in North Tonawanda, with other places of historic significance along the way.
During our tour we will stop for lunch at Webster’s Bistro. After lunch our trained historians will inform you about the area’s earliest pioneer settlers and the associated rush of immigrants that poured into the area establishing the Twin Cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda. Finally enjoy a guided tour through the gracious 10 room homestead of pioneer Benjamin Long built in 1829 before returing to the Carnegie Art Center.
This tour meets at the Carnegie Art Center - 240 Goundry Street, North Tonawanda, NY 14120. Parking is available at the Carnegie Parking lot and on the surrounding side streets.
