Speaker biographies

Jude Kirton-Darling

Jude Kirton-Darling grew up in Middlesbrough, and was elected as a new Labour MEP for North East England at the May 2014 European Elections.

After 15 years working within the Labour and trade union movement, including leading Europe’s steelworkers unions in negotiations with employers and the European institutions, Jude was elected Confederal Secretary at the European TUC (trade Union Congress) in 2011. Within the ETUC, she directed European trade union work in the areas of international trade, energy, industrial policy, environment and health and safety

Jude currently sits on the EP's International Trade (INTA) and Petitions (PETI) committees, and is a substitute member of the Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) committee.

Karen Callebaut

Karen Callebaut is Technical Manager at the Environmental Department of the Antwerp Port Authority. She is responsible for energy and climate projects, including sustainable development of port areas. She holds more than 10 years of experience in environmental project management. Before joining the Antwerp Port Authority she worked in consultancy, focusing on various topics amongst which climate change, environmental risk assessment and environmental standards. Karen graduated as Master of Science in Bioscience Engineering - Environmental Technology (University of Ghent, Belgium).

 

Joop Oude Lohuis, Client Director Ecofys

Joop Oude Lohuis started his career at Gasunie, a major trader and gastransport company in the Netherlands. In the mid-eighties natural gas wasseen as the clean and safe alternative for coal and nuclear. After working forthe University Institute on Chemical Technology for one year, he joined theMinistry of Environment where he stayed for the next 6 years. In this periodsome major steps in national and EU climate policy were prepared andimplemented, e.g. taxation on carbon and energy content for gas andelectricity and long term agreements with industry. Another period with theenergy industry followed where the energy market was liberalised andprivatised. From 2000-2010 he joined the Netherlands EnvironmentalAssessment Agency where he extended his working area to global evaluation of sustainability. As aclient director in Ecofys he is responsible for all assignments that are carried out in the area of energyand carbon efficiency; including carbon capture and storage.
