In the US, 5 millions persons live with some form of memory loss or dementia- Alzheimer’s Disease being the most well-known. Of the 65 and over population ,1 in 9 is affected by some form of memory loss. In your diaconal ministry  you will not be able to avoid  dealing with  persons living with memory loss at some point .

Persons living with dementia bring a deep appreciation of feeling, poetry, faith and music to their experience- this is one of the joys of this ministry. At the same time, challenges and ethical dilemmas abound.

The Rev. Christiaan Beukman has been the pastoral ministries manager of Linden Ponds Retirement Community in Hingham since 2004. He will share wisdom about ways to support people with memory loss as well as how we can create dementia-friendly worship.
Chris was named archdeacon in the Diocese of MA in December 2018. He was ordained a deacon in 2009 and has served parishes in Quincy, Walpole and Franklin.

Beukman is a native of the Netherlands who moved to the Boston area in 1981 after meeting his wife, Lucy, in Jerusalem.  He attended Harvard Divinity School and Andover-Newton Theological School, and was the Protestant chaplain and diversity specialist at Carney Hospital in Dorchester for 14 years.

This month's conversation will be hosted by Julie Lytle, the Executive Director of Province I.

Deacons Talking on the Road to Emmaus is a web based way for deacons to walk with each other and share stories in hope of inspiring, supporting and renewing diaconal ministries. It is inspired by the story of Cleopas and another disciple who, after recounting all that they had experienced while walking on the road to Emmaus with a stranger, recognized Jesus in their midst (Luke 24:13-32). Jesus' presence led them to release their fear and grief, return to Jerusalem to share their experience of the resurrected Christ with the gathered community, and renew their ministry with confidence.

Sponsored by the New England Deacons Network and the Episcopal Province of New England (Province I), these free, live, interactive web conferences will occur monthly on the third Thursday, 7:00 -8:15 pm and feature deacons sharing stories from their ministries, exploring case studies, offering peer wisdom and feedback, and exchanging mutual support.
