Course Description: This course addresses the developmental benefits of building structures with young children. Participants will explore materials and accessories, which may be used to engage children in discovery and meaningful play with the processes of building structures. This course will link concepts and activities to the new Mass STEM guidelines for Perk & MA Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences.
Course objectives:
1. Review and intentionally plan for connections between activities and MA Learning standards throughout the course
2. List developmental benefits of building structures with children ages 3 – 5.
3. Plan for meaningful activities with building structures in a variety of spaces.
4. Expand children’s experiences with building structures.
5. Apply scientific inquiry process in the classroom.’
6. Engage children in open exploration building structures and basic engineering principles.
7. Demonstrate understanding of focused and extended cross curriculum exploration.
8. Demonstrate the importance, role, and variety of documentation, using a written documentation form.
9. Select appropriate books and literacy materials and integrate/connect these literacy materials into the building activities.
