Course Description: Develop specific expertise in working with children who are experiencing the unique challenges associated with ADHD. Learn about supporting ADHD for all ages of child. Explore behaviors associated with the three types of ADHD diagnosis. Learn about the diagnosis and common symptoms, concrete, specific strategies, tools, and activities to support children with ADHD. Overcome frustration, resistance, and poor self-esteem; build tools for focus, calmness, and success. Build an understanding of the unique challenges faced by families with a child who has ADHD and connect to, dialog with, and support families. Opportunities to practice skills and tools are a key element of this course.
Course Objectives:
1. Describe the history of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder with particular not given to changes in the last 20 years
2. Explain the features of ADHD and their impact on child development, as well as understand common challenges and barriers for children with ADHD and their families
3. Distinguish between types of ADHD, and understand that all children with ADHD are different from one another
4. Apply strategies to support children experiencing different symptoms and challenges associated with ADHD and their families
6. Examine case studies and determine best practices
7. Identify concrete, practical strategies to be used at the student’s program
