NET - Natural Environment Teaching

This two-day workshop is designed to help prepare participants to assess using the Verbal Behavior Milestones and Placement Program (VB-MAPP). The VB-MAPP is based on B.F. SKinner’s (1857) analysis of verbal behavior, established developmental milestones, and research from the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA).  Based upon assessment results, guidelines for selecting and teaching developmentally-appropriate language and other related skills using Natural Environment Teaching (NET) will be discussed.  Hands-on activities will provide instruction on how to plan and implement individual and group lessons based on student motivation.  It is strongly recommended that a VB-MAPP guide and protocol be brought to the workshop.

-Distinguish between five components of the VB-MAPP: Milestones Assessment, Barriers Assessment, Transition Assessment, Task Analysis and Skills Tracking, and Placement and IEP Goals.

-Conduct score and interpret the VB-MAPP

-Explain the difference between discrete trail training (DTT) and natural environment teaching (NET)

-Discuss developmentally appropriate ABA programming based upon individual student profiles

-Explain the importance of conditioning neutral and/or non-preferred activities with positive reinforcement for the purpose of increasing NET opportunities

-Utilize criteria for selecting appropriate NET activities.

-Organize environment to ensure successful implementation of NET

-Demonstrate research-based teaching procedures during NET

-Create an original NET lesson plan

-Employ an efficient and effective data collection system for NET

-Utilize preferred activities (books, videos) to develop a student’s ability to answer novel “wh” questions

-Capture and contrive opportunities to teach manding for information
