Home Sweet Home Part 4: Community Outreach and Engagement

This is the last in the 2016 quarterly series of workshops,  Home, Sweet Home.

Our demographics are changing, and our world is changing, and with them a growing demand for a greater variety of choices in home type, design and location.

In workshops 1 - 3, attendees looked at differenty types of living units - as well as their benefits and challenges.

Part four:  Community Outreach and Engagement

Presenter:  Molly Donovan, UNH Cooperative Extension

Whether changing zoning, writing Master Plan chapters or implementing them, or even bringing a new project to town, the process can be enriched and success might be more achievable if your community members are involved from the beginning.  But who should be at the table, and why?  How do you get them there?  And why is their involvment important?

In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about how to think about outreach beyond traditional meeting notices and why that Is important.  Participants will learn how to identify key groups or individuals who might be at the table, and why it could be critical they are included from the beginning. Participants will also learn the difference between an public hearing and public engagement,  and how all this could make a difference for community acceptance of whatever the issue is.

Attendees will come away with:

  • An understanding of the difference between compliance and making a difference
  • An understanding of the importance of reaching out to those not usually part of processes like this
  • An understanding of the importance of involving the community from the beginning
  • An awareness that the work prior to those "public hearings" can be critical to success

Community citizens and  leaders, planners, architects, project managers and others would benefit from this workshop.
