Oyster Reef Construction
Waterway Park, Oak Island
Saturday, March 23, 2013
10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The N.C. Coastal Federation and the Town of Oak Island invite community members and volunteers to celebrate our beautiful coast with the second and final oyster reef construction event at the Waterway Park in Oak Island. Volunteers will help to build two new oyster reefs by carrying and hauling the remaining 5,000 shell and marl bags from the stockpile area down to the shoreline during low tide where they will be stacked in the water to form the new reefs. In addition, we will be pulling seine nets and offering fun educational activities focused on oyster and salt marsh habitat.
Please join us and bring your friends, family and co-workers for a couple of hours or for the whole day to participate in a fun and rewarding activity. All project supplies and equipment as well as snacks and refreshments will be provided. Volunteers should wear clothing that may get wet and dirty and closed-toe shoes (required). This event is suitable for all ages. Pre-registration is requested.
At the event, volunteers will be able to join the federation for a special discounted membership price of $15!
