NORTH BAY SCBWI / March 29 / Author Natasha Yim

Presents - Writing History that's Fun for Kids

Natasha Yim

You’re invited to discover the joys and challenges of writing narrative non-fiction for kids.  Natasha will discuss selecting your subject, research, writing and editing and the importance of finding the “story” behind the facts. With examples from her two non-fiction titles: Cixi, The Dragon Empress (Goosebottom Books, 2011) and Sacajawea of the Shoshone (Goosebottom Books, 2012) she will discuss tackling controversial facts, keeping track of your resources and research notes and most importantly, making history fun for kids in and out of the classroom.

Her latest book, Sacajawea of the Shoshone has been nominated for the American Library Association’s (ALA) Amelia Bloomer List and was recently selected for the Children’s Book Council’s Hot Off The Press reading list. In addition to Sacajawea and Cixi, The Dragon Empress, Natasha is also the author of the picture books Otto’s Rainy Day (Charlesbridge Publishing, 2000) and the upcoming Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas (Charlesbridge Publishing, 2014). She has also written non-fiction articles for “Highlights for Children”, “Appleseed”, and “Faces” magazines.

Ms. Yim has a B.A. in English Literature with a Writing Emphasis and an M.S. in Counseling Psychology both from Dominican College in San Rafael. She is currently working part time helping to connect Mendocino County school personnel with prevention and intervention resources for kids with mental health issues.
