Alternative Transportation Liability (Scooters, Uber, Revel ride share)

Alternative means of local personal transportation from the usual automobiles and buses may range from such neighborhood electric vehicles (NEV's) such as electric bikes, scooters and skateboards, to other modes of transport such as bicycles and even rollerblades, if such are permitted by the municipality for use on public streets.

Many of these modes of transportation are not considered "motor vehicles" or even as "vehicles" under state vehicle codes and rules of the road. Consequently, they may not be covered by or may be explicitly excluded from coverage under auto and homeowners' insurance policies.

This session will explore potential liability claims arising from the use of such alternative modes of transportation, and how such claims may be handled.
